A near-record 49 percent of Americans view the Democratic Party as “too liberal,” according to a USA Today/Gallup poll that also underscores an increasingly positive view of Republicans.
Indeed, the percentage who describe the Republican as “about right” zoomed from 34 percent a year ago to 41 percent now, a Gallup analysis reported today. Last year, 43 percent described the GOP as too conservative, compared with 40 percent now.
The 49 percent who said the Democratic Party is too liberal is 1 point shy of the 50 percent who voiced that opinion 1994, which had been the high mark since Gallup first asked the question in 1992.
Since February 2008, the percentage labeling the Democratic Party "too liberal" rose by 12 points among independents and 8 points among Republicans, with little change among Democrats, Gallup reported. Meanwhile, the percentage who said the Democratic Party is “about right” has declined to 38 percent.
